Grommet

Grommets are parts used when a through-hole is drilled in a sheet of material. They attach to the edge of the hole to protect a cable from the rough edge. Passing a cable through a non-grommeted hole increases the chance of the cable coating being scratched as it moves or vibrates against the hole edge, potentially leading to a short circuit-induced fire in the worst-case scenario. Grommets made of materials such as rubber and plastic are available. The standard of grommet size should be selected to match the hole size. There are also grommet types that are cut to match specific hole shapes and attach in alignment with the hole edge. There are standard size grommets that have the hole covered by a membrane. A hole of any size can be punctured through the membrane to match the diameter of the cable passed through. Membrane-covered grommets are more dust-proof than regular grommets.
